The importance of the social space of a correctional institution for the formation of socio-cultural qualities of a convict’s personality

Abstract. Deprivation of liberty is traditionally regarded as one of the most complex social institutions. Specialists in the field of penitentiary sociology and criminology are particularly interested in the social space of correctional institutions as a condition for the formation of a specific social community. In this regard, as the author of the article notes, the problem of the formation of socio-cultural qualities in the personality of a convict in the closed social space of a correctional institution is of particular interest. The specific nature of the closeness of correctional institutions has formed two unequal social communities in terms of quantitative and qualitative composition — the «penitentiary community» and the «penitentiary society». The peculiarities of the closed nature of the life of these social communities allow specialists in the field of penitentiary sociology and criminology to record the increased influence on the personality of the convict on their part. Of course, as a natural question, there will be a problem of the activities of the correctional institutions administration in this regard. This formulation of the issue has been reflected not only in the scientific literature, but also in law enforcement practice. Numerous empirical studies of the penitentiary society have documented the presence of a key problem of those qualitative characteristics of the social space of a correctional institution that influence the formation of socio-cultural qualities of the personality of convicts. To solve this problem, the author analyzed the main approaches to understanding the social space, institutions of the domestic penal system. The concept of the social space of a correctional institution was clarified, its main features (spatial and temporal boundaries) were defined; formal and informal communication channels determining convicts’ access to material resources in the social space of a correctional institution. As a result of the analysis of the interaction of these signs on the socio-cultural qualities of the convicts’ personality, the author came to the conclusion that the formative action of the socio-cultural qualities of the convict’s personality and the properties of the social space of the correctional institution are interdependent.
