Abstract. Those sentenced to deprivation of liberty belong to the most sensitive category of citizens to social changes. The author of the article conducts a study among convicts in order to identify the dynamics of changes in social well-being with the introduction of various forms of penitentiary prevention. In this connection, the author made an attempt to analyze the dynamics of the social well-being of convicts serving sentences in correctional colonies of general and strict regime, depending on the period of stay in them — upon arrival from the pre-trial detention center, and after serving 1/3 of the sentence. The study was conducted in the period October-November 2021. N = 150 respondents — heads of educational departments, their deputies and senior inspectors nominated for the position — «head of the educational department» took part in an expert survey conducted through a questionnaire. The main criterion for getting into the sample was training at the advanced training courses of the Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, which implies at least five years of work experience in the educational department. The sample is targeted, one-stage. In the course of the study, it was found that the factors influencing the character of the well-being of convicts are the systems of relations that exist in the penitentiary society — formal and informal. The corresponding subject of formal relations is the administration of the IC. Informal — the penitentiary community. Depending on which system of relations prevails in a correctional facility, the nature of the convict’s social well-being also depends. The study is of practical importance, as it allows to determine the most effective forms of penitentiary prevention that help to improve the social well-being of convicts and increase their adaptation to society after release.
