Abstract. In this article, the author examines the problems faced by single-industry towns in Russia, as well as the need for their transformation. Currently, most single-industry towns are in crisis, with high environmental and transport tension, problems of development, deterioration of infrastructure and shortage of energy resources.

However, the most significant problem is the social problem of employment. Single-industry towns, as closed socio-ecological-economic systems, do not always provide sufficient opportunities for professional development of people, especially when the number of employees at city-forming enterprises is reduced.

The author notes that the development of single-industry towns depends on one core industry, which makes them vulnerable to market fluctuations that affect income, employment levels and social standards of living. Unemployment in single-industry towns often leads to migration, demographic, economic and social problems. The article mentions the need to develop new technologies and mechanisms to ensure guaranteed employment for the population of a single-industry town, taking into account the characteristics of each city.

The author proposes to focus on new forms of employment and working conditions, such as quantitative and functional flexibility, flexible forms of employment and organization of work activities.

To improve performance, it is necessary to quickly adapt the population of single-industry towns to the changing requirements of the economic sphere, including the development of new technologies and innovations. This requires complex interaction between the spheres of education, municipal government and business institutions.
